To say that I'm a huge chendol lover would be an understatement.
I've LOVED chendol since I was a kid, because it combines two of my favourite things: coconut milk and gula melaka.
I guess that's why I love Malacca, because that's where you can find really yummy chendol!
Personally, I think that the ideal chendol (the green squiggly worms) should be light green and soft, not hard and frozen like the versions often dished out at local food courts. Also, the ice mustn't be too coarsely shaved, otherwise, there won't be a smooth texture. The gula melaka should also be fragrant and sweet to complement the coconut milk.
I sound quite picky I know, but my common gripe is that local stores often use ready made chendol that just freezes up when the ice is shaved on top. And the gula melaka that is used is too sweet sometimes, and some stores even add an atap Chee!? Atap chee is for ice kachang!!!
Just when I had given up on local chendol, I chanced upon ieatishootipost's post on Cendol Melaka at Changi Village. What intrigued me was the fact that the store owner gets his ingredients direct from Malacca! Brownie points for that! :)
You can have the yummy treat either in a bowl or as a drink (I love both). The chendol from Cendol Melaka is soft, yet not mushy, and has a slightly salty tinge that complements the sweet and fragrant gula melaka and the creamy coconut milk perfectly.
It's one of the best chendols I've had in a long while, even better than some in Malacca I would say.
Besides the traditional one with just coconut milk, gula melaka and chendol, they also have variants with red beans, corn and even durian! If you're a chendol lover like me, do give it a try :)
Till the next bite (or sip).
